Established since 2010, The Warrior Martial Arts teaches a combination of different forms of SILAT (a Southeast Asian Martial Art which originates from Malaysia and Indonesia). Whilst a number of the concepts have been modernized through a natural and evolutionary process, many of the principals are preserved as traditionally as they were taught. Training with a clear learning progression, in a fun and safe environment, it’s a great way to stay fit and learn self-defense techniques that enable you to feel more secure in any environment, and improve quality of life. With both adult and children's classes available in studios in and around London, it’s a martial arts experience not to be missed.
The Way Of The Warrior
So the rest of the world over the past 20 – 30 years is just beginning to find out about Silat. Through the form of inspired masters of the art, who came into contact with foreign travelers. Daring to show interest in such a mystical, creative and often portrayed as deadly art of combat, these foreigners studied to their capacity and spread their acquired knowledge to western counterparts as far as Europe, America and sooner or later, Hollywood. In today’s modern world of mass communication and commercialization, the once unknown art of ‘Silat’, is now being exposed to global recognition.
Traditional silat has always been trained with a high emphasis on the internal, focusing the mind and body, dispelling the disillusions of popular trends which act against good morals and way of life and having the highest respect for other human beings and creatures. There are countless schools for learning silat which span the entire plane of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Commonly referred to as the Malay Archipelago or Nusantara. Silat's popularity in Western countries is growing, even London has seen an emergence of Silat schools across the city.
Silat can be described as a traditionally practiced martial technique and expression of combat unique to this part of Far East Asia. Comparisons can be made with the adoption and deep roots of internal masters of other fighting arts, such as the Shoaling Monks of China and expressive healing arts like Tai Chi Chuan, Ching-Yei Chung, Bagua and even Arts like Kalari from India.
Silat, as practiced in the majority of schools, has two major parts to it, the first is ‘technique’, any form of blocking, striking, grappling, yielding, evasion/footwork, drilling and so forth, can all be considered as the basic ‘techniques’ which can be applied in a situation or encounter with an opponent. This is commonly referred to as ‘jurus’. The other part is the ‘seni’, which is equivalent to the physical expression of combat in art form, with dance like movements and often accompanied with traditional music in the form of gongs.
